develop simple web applications for managing information and other resources using available tools

Having learnt in the last chapter that:
Internet is the largest network that connects people all over the world.

                        whilst

*The web is a service of the Internet and that its a big collection of electronic documents.

I learnt about web applications as any application, services in the internet.. which are summarised by the diagram below..

Web 2.0 Applications

In the first learning objective..i learnt that a computer is a programmable electronic device..My question was now then how is it programmed and by whom..So as the classes passed i got to learn about the languages used to program a computer.
Although i realised that programming languages come in different types..I learnt that programming languages are divided into 2 types:
low-level--which include machine language(which is 1st generation language)  and  Assembly language(which is 2nd generation language)..these two languages depends on the machine.

high-level-- this involve 3rd generation, 4th generation, 5th generation
for example[C++,Visual Basic]

**One thing i realised was that as the programming languages changed from generation to generation..they were simplified and made more user friendly.

Internet and World Wide Web

I thought web was the other name for internet..My lecturer helped me to understand that these to are different..Internet is the largest network which allows people in different geographical location to share resources and communicate. While web is a service provided by internet..This was made easy when she gave an example that one can use internet without using web..like having a skype call via a phone...But for one to use web,he has to use internet..Generally, Web is a big collection of electronic documents on the internet.

As a youth, the only use of internet i knew was to access information and communicate using social networks..but after the lecture i learnt with internet one can:
  • access information
  • upload / download files between workstations(computers).
  • share resources
  • buy product and services
It is has always been my habit to read my home country's newspaper online. It never got to me that newsroom is one of the services of the internet..Some services provided by the internet include Email, World Wide Web, Protocol, Chatroom, Instant Messaging.

Relational database design approach

I have always wondered how the university manages information for all the students..Where the information will be contained and how it will be contained there..After a full class session, all of my questions were answered..I got to know that information can be stored using a mechanism called database , which is created using a software called database management system.. and that the purpose of this mechanism is to organize, store and control data..
Examples for this software includes ( microsoft access ,  mySQL ,  oracle

For this mechanism to be functional it is suppose to have certain components..which are
  • Data item
this is a field in data processing and it is a distinct piece of information..
  • Schema..(ERD)
it describes the organisation of data and the relationship within databases.

  •  Constraints
  •  Relationship
For a database to be functional it is suppose to have certain fundamentals which are:

  1.  KEY
this is a specific piece of data..usually contained in a column..such as subject/first name..

   2.   RECORD

a cluster of connected fields that describes a person/thing usually contained in a row

 3.   KEY FIELD

a field with unique/specific information of each record ..such as student ID for student..

4.  TABLE

a collection of records for a single subject such as STUDENTS

5.   RELATIONAL DATABASE

multiple tables connected together to address a business process such as managing time table

6. OBJECTS

portion of an Access database that help one view, edit, manage and analyse data.

I learnt that there are different database languages each with its own situation to which  it is used :

  • DDL(Data definition language)--used for creating a database
  • DML(Data manipulating language)--used to manipulate or query data in the database
  • DCL(Data control language)
Lastly i learnt that database comes in different models/formats namely:
  • Hierarchical database
  •  Network database
  •  Relational database
  •  Object-relational database

Discuss the various types of IS that are in use by various organisation

Although this topic was difficult to grasp, it was because of it that i got to understand why an executive's credentials  in organisation are very much different form the the person in the supervisory level..This is also because of their responsibilities,in which they use different information systems to do their jobs..Moreover i got to learn that there are different types of IS and each type has a specific user. These include:

  • Executive Support System (ESS)--used by top executives
  • Transaction Processing System (TPS)--used by low-level operational managers
  • Decision Support System (DSS)--used by middle level managers usually to support unstructured problems
  • Management Information System (MIS)--also used by maiddle-level managers to support structured problems.
  • Expert System (ES)
  • Office Automated System(OAS)

FOR A CBIS to carry out its functions 6 components must be present as shown below

                                                IS DEVELOPMENT

For the IS to be used it has to be developed and there are different ways in which an information system can be developed..The more common IS Methodologies  are:

-Gane & Sarsons (STRADIS)-which is the earliest and widely used methodology
-Information Enginnering (IE)
-Structured Approach (SDLC)
-Prototyping/ iterative approach
-Jackson System Development
-Ethics
-Soft System Methodology (SSM)

                                 STRADIS....

                        SDLC.....

PROTOTYPING....

We where given a task to create or develop a system as a group..My friends and i focused on created a system which will help AIU to help solve some of its unstructured as well as structured which are related to security..And i feel it was one of the best presentations as we tried to be imaginative and cohesive as we could.

Data, Information Technology and problems of information management...

Prior to the commencement of the lecture, the lecturer gave us a general overview of the technological world..However, i learnt that a computer is an electronic device or a programmable device which accepts data, process it and gives output due to a set of instructions.. I learnt that the basic operations of are a computer are  (a)..input
                       (b)..processing
                       (c)..output
                       (d)..storage
                       (e)..communication

Before the lecture...i used to use the terms data and information interchangeably because i was not aware that they are different...It was after the lecture that i got to know that data is just raw facts whilst information is processed data.

** I learnt that data when grouped becomes information, and when information is contexualised becomes knowledge..The computer PROCESSES  data to become INFORMATION.
So the computer accepts data from input devices(any hardware devices which allows the user to enter data or even instructions into the computer). Some examples of these are scanners, mouse, keyboards.
After accepting the data, the computer processes it and gives information as the output..via output devices  like monitor, printer, speaker.
In addition, i learnt that information is used for decision making, and also to influence..because in order to convince an investor ,one uses information rather than data.
Moreover, information is meant to be valuable, and in order to achieve this it must be accurate, verifiable, timely, organized, complete and useful. Information must be concise as well as cohesive to the subject at hand, and also the sources must also be clear thus coming to another point of  DATA INTEGRITY, which is the degree to which data is correct. Which made sense to me because one cannot create correct information from incorrect data..

*Before my esteemed lecturer came to my rescue, i wondered how people in different geographical locations communicate using computers. Thus when i got to hear of a computer network, which is a group of interconnected computers by hardware or software.

  INFORMATION MANAGEMENT :
The first thing prior to the commencement of the topic, we were told to form groups to present on certain topics related to information management..It was through these group presentations that i got to know that IM is the collection and management of information from one or more sources and the distribution of that information to one or more audiences.
)

In addition, for information management to be successful..there must be 4 key points namely
technology
people
content
process
                                       &

if these keys are not handled professional they give rise to so many problems which tend to hinder information management...and this the part where my colleague and i presented on..We pointed that
even though the aforementioned key points are necessary for information management to be successful, most of the problems are also centralised on these key points..

-internal(office) politics
*people are meant to coordinate activities in an organisation, and one can sabotage the other simply maybe because the other person was chosen to oversee a certain department..
-cracking(commonly known as hacking)
-virus
-process
*how we manage information(paper base system/computer base system)
**information on paper is prone to damage due to wear or being torn..as one tries to get the desired file..he/she might mistakenly distort information

IT AND ICT

When the topic was announced, i was bored because i thought i knew it all, little did i know that although IT and ICT are related they are to somewhat extent different. To begin with, IT deals with a computer as a tool to perform certain tasks whilst ICT deals with the interconnection between computers..(communication technologies)..
I learnt that IT has two important concepts which are IT architecture and IT infrastructure whreby
IT architecture deals with orientation of the fixed assets of the organisation
                                        while
IT infrastructure encompasses IT components, IT personnel, IT services as examplified by the diagram which my lecturer provided, which made it easy for me to understand the relationship between the two concepts..

It was after this lecture that i got to relate how ICT is being applied in various sectors like education, banking and even health sectors..After this lecture i started appreciation technology and even thinking of being in the technological world...

My Experience at AiU

Assalam Alaykum....

Due to the problems i encountered during my journey,my anticipation was that AiU was going to be hell for me yet i did not know that Allah had so much in store for me...

As of now my experience so far at AiU is a memory i wish to reminisce everyday of my life as it was remarkable and thrilling at the same time.Upon reaching the campus,i was welcomed with love with my fellow students and led the way to the student's affairs department. After all the paper work, i was pleased to hear that there were some other students from my country and this put my heart at ease. Being a foreigner i thought i was going to encounter a lot of discrimination from students as well as the personnel but i was wrong..

I was surprised to see the lecturers being so fair regardless of ethnic standards..I hope things will continue to be nice..Allahmdulillah im here now.. May Allah bless this place...

HONESTLY THE PLACE IS JUS AWESOME
